Seeing as this is my favorite cat breed, I thought I’d have some fun and write a little blog about them.
Maine Coon ancestors arrived on ships with the Vikings. They developed into large, long-haired cats over generations that were faced with harsh winter conditions. The survivors were the largest, hairiest cats which make this breed very hearty in cold climates. They are extremely good-natured and that’s a plus due to their large size.
If you want a cat that’s a little more like a dog, get a Maine Coon. They are extremely playful and love to interact with people. This makes them easy to train and travel with. They are beautiful cats that will steal your heart.
A few things you need to know:
1. Due to their large size, Maine Coon kittens grow rapidly like a giant breed dog. Ensure correct growth with a raw food diet.
2. Species-appropriate nutrition is essential for healthy development and maintenance. Don’t be cheap with food and you will save on vet bills!
3. Good quality protein. Keep the kidneys healthy by offering a raw food diet that includes high-quality lean protein and hydrates your cat properly. It’s essential for long-term kidney health.
4. Find a holistic veterinarian to give you as many alternatives for health care as possible. The more options, the better.
5. Take your cat for yearly health exams and bloodwork. Teach your cat about being handled and restrained when they are small so that vet trips are not stressful.
Maine Coons are one of the most striking breeds. If you choose to adopt one into your family, give them the very best!
